For the fourth year in a row, the family visited Becker Vineyards in Stonewall, Texas for a picnic and wine tasting over Spring Break. We are thrilled to report that the Beckers are adding a large, dramatic (high, high ceilings), panel-lined tasting room behind the current tasting bar. This is a good thing because the tasting room was packed throughout our picnic. The children look forward to the picnic as much as the adults. There’s a nice grassy lawn area where the kids run around and kick around the soccer ball, and an aging horse in a pasture nearby that they like to pet from the fence. The menu is aways the same: Anne Willan’s Pan Bagnat from her cookbook Good Food No Fuss, Texas goat cheese (Cheesy Girl out of Sealy is what we are into lately and it is yummy.) on crackers, black seedless grapes and of course a Becker wine. Typically we taste the Becker wines that are only sold at the winery. We sampled the new Fleur Savage, an off-dry Chenin Blanc billed as a sweet wine. It made for some easy lunchtime sipping and paired nicely with the sandwich. I am not a big Pinot Grigio drinker, but also enjoyed the Pinot Grigio. -alyce eyster
